When I got my Botox done I took the opportunity to quiz Dr Samir of Doctor 1.618 on the facts about Botox.
How does Botox work?
Despite what you may think, Botox doesn’t actually remove wrinkles. It works by temporarily disabling the facial muscles that cause wrinkles. Once injected, the substance works to block signals (neurotransmitters) from contracting treated muscles, causing the facial muscle to relax. As muscles become less stiff, wrinkles begin to flatten out and soften.
How long does it last?
The effects usually begin within 48 hours of the injection and become noticeable about 3-5 days and continue to improve till about 2 weeks after treatment. How long it lasts depends on the individual and how much the person uses their facial muscles. IE if you have a very expressive face the effects will wear off quicker. In general, it last between 3-5 months.
Does Botox need to be administered by a doctor?
It doesn’t have to be a doctor but you do need to see someone who is medically qualified to understand the complexities of facial muscle structure. Its also crucial they have an aesthetic sense.
Botox can help prevent wrinkles that are already present from becoming deeper but there is no point in having Botox at an early age if you don’t have any lines.
Is Botox painful?
Nope. There is a slight pricking or pinching sensation but nothing bad.
Does Botox give you an expressionless face?
No, it’s a common misconception that Botox causes the inability to move a muscle. Botox helps relax the facial muscles at the point of injection, aside from these areas all muscles involved in facial expression remain fully functional. The frozen look comes about when a patient gets too much Botox in different areas around the face.
Should you have Botox as a preventative measure?
Botox can help prevent wrinkles that are already present from becoming deeper but there is no point in having Botox at an early age if you don’t have any lines.
